Since 1984, The Doorways has served Virginia – and the world – from Richmond. Along the way we’ve provided more than a million nights of healing in an emotionally supportive environment for families who need to be close to loved ones in the hospital, but not far from the feeling of “home.” We are proud to be Richmond’s largest provider of lodging, support and non-medical services for guests of all ages. And today, more than ever, we’re welcoming a new type of guest: the patients themselves.
We are now at a critical crossroads in our history, and YOU CAN PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE. In 2015, The Doorways launched a five-year renovation campaign. It will refresh and revitalize public, work, and guest spaces, incorporating a total of three different guest room layouts — each designed to better serve the needs of our guests and patients over time. New rooms will be added, as will a therapeutic garden. The renovation also addresses the many infrastructure repairs, upgrades, and wear-and-tear improvements necessary to maintain a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment for our patients and their families.
UPDATES & UPGRADES
Facility Updates: RENOVATION, REPAIR AND CONSTRUCTION
After providing one million nights of lodging, it’s time to address the wear and tear on our infrastructure. Annual contributions are a critical part of our work — but they don’t fully provide for the periodic repairs and upgrades needed to maintain our large, highly-trafficked facility. Each year we serve more than 10,000 individuals for over 50,000 nights of lodging. We refuse to turn anyone away. That’s why capital campaign donations like yours are so important. Every gift we receive gets us closer to our goal, to make the repairs, renovations and upgrades needed to improve the comfort and safety of our guests. Since patients and their families can’t be at home, we bring home to them — and they’ll have you to thank!
Guest Room Upgrades: MEETING PATIENTS’ NEEDS
The number of patients staying at The Doorways is greater than ever, and we expect this trend only to rise. The lodging needs of critically ill patients are vastly different from the needs of their family members. For longer-term guests receiving treatment and recovering from surgeries, small hotel-style rooms prevent them from incorporating activities of daily living into their recoveries — such as cooking, working at a desk, stretching and other rehabilitative movement. An increasing number of treatments are being performed on an outpatient basis — even if those treatments require days or even weeks to complete. The shorter hospital stays translate to longer recovery times and length of stay for our guests. Our rooms must evolve to meet these changing needs.
THE POWER OF A GIFT
This is your chance to make a difference for families and patients going through the most stressful, chaotic, and trying time of their lives. As their needs change, so must our ability to serve them. Your donation will help us build upon our legacy of compassion and hospitality for patients and families during their medical stays in Richmond!
Your capital campaign gifts will support:
Renovation of Public Spaces
Including renovation of five kitchens, our television and game lounge, dining room, library, parlor, children’s activity room, lobby, exercise room and reception area.
Building Repairs, Improvements & Upgrades
Creation of a Therapeutic Garden
Offering guests a soothing outdoor space to relax and unwind after long days spent in the hospital.
Renovation & Construction of Guest Rooms
For 125 standard, midsize and large rooms, ten percent more rooms than our current number. 35 of those are extended stay rooms for longer-term guests receiving
treatment and recovering from surgeries.
