Bone Marrow Transplant
Karen Sparrow knows she has received a blessing.
She and her daughter, Emily, lived at The Doorways for 10 months while she waited for, and recovered from, a stem cell transplant.
“I received umbilical cord blood from two newborns. I have been in the hospital three times during my transplant and if it wasn’t for here, I don’t know what we would have done.”
“Everybody here is like family,” Karen said. “I am so glad I didn’t have to worry about my daughter and my dad while I was in the hospital. They took care of everything and gave us a home.”
“After I got out of the hospital, I stayed until my treatments were finished. When you’ve had a bone marrow transplant, food doesn’t taste good, and I struggled to eat. The social aspect, being with other people, helped me to eat by taking my mind off of things. You talk, take a bite, talk, take a bite. And after a while, you realize you’ve finished your dinner!”
