Lisa Claggett was at a crossroads.
She had just moved to Fort Lee to be with her sister and was excited to start a new life. She had been feeling poorly, and her sister insisted she go to go the doctor. That’s when she learned she had cancer – stage 3B Breast Cancer. Very aggressive.
“My heart stopped, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing!”
Lisa was referred to VCU Massey Cancer Center for surgery, chemo, radiation and a clinical trial: “I got the works!” Her sister drove her back and forth from Ft. Lee to Richmond, 2-3 times a week for her treatments, but Lisa needed to be at VCU 5 days a week for radiation. It was so exhausting for both sisters. “The Doorways was a Godsend…during my time in Richmond, everybody worked together to make sure my stay was as comfortable as it could be.” Lisa stayed at The Doorways for two months during her eight weeks of radiation.
Lisa says the camaraderie at The Doorways is especially important. “You think you’ve got it bad,” but the other guests help provide perspective. “You come here not knowing anybody, and you leave with new friends – a new family.”
