The Legacy of Dolly Hintz
On May 15, the world lost a true visionary, and The Doorways lost one of the guiding forces behind its mission of hospitality and care.
Dolly Hintz believed families facing medical crises deserved more than just a place to stay. They deserved comfort, compassion, and the ability to remain close to the people and care they needed most.
As cofounder of The Doorways, Dolly was instrumental in transforming a bold vision into a lasting source of support for thousands of families traveling to Richmond for medical care. What began as an idea rooted in compassion grew through her determination, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
But Dolly was far more than a founder.
She continually looked for new ways to strengthen and expand the mission of The Doorways. From helping transform a former hotel into a welcoming hospitality house to supporting major milestones and future growth, she played a crucial role in shaping The Doorways into the largest donation-based hospital hospitality house in the country.
Even as The Doorways evolved over the decades, Dolly remained deeply connected to its mission. She often referred to The Doorways as “one of her children,” a reflection of the care and devotion she poured into the organization throughout her life. She attended events, celebrated milestones, encouraged staff and volunteers, and generously supported projects that would directly impact guests and families.
One of those lasting gifts was Dolly’s Garden, a peaceful outdoor oasis where guests can rest, reflect, and find moments of calm during uncertain times. Like so many spaces shaped by Dolly’s vision, the garden reflects her belief that healing extends beyond medical care alone.
Dolly’s greatest legacy lives far beyond buildings or spaces.
It lives in the thousands of families who have found comfort within these walls. It lives in the volunteers who continue carrying the mission forward. It lives in the quiet acts of kindness shared each day throughout the house and in the sense of community she helped create through decades of dedication.
Today, every open door at The Doorways reflects the vision Dolly helped bring to life.
Her compassion, leadership, and generosity will continue shaping this house and the families it serves for generations to come.
Thank you, Dolly
