How one guest found community at The Doorways and returned to support others along the way
When Jeff arrived at The Doorways during his transplant journey, he was searching for a place to stay close to medical care. What he found was something far greater: a community.
Traveling from Pickens, South Carolina, Jeff and Teresa, his wife, came to Richmond during an overwhelming season filled with uncertainty, long hospital days, and difficult decisions. After learning they would need to remain in the area for treatment, they were referred to The Doorways, where they quickly found comfort not only in having a place to stay, but in the people around them.
Jeff remembers arriving exhausted and anxious, carrying the weight of everything happening at once. But once they settled in, The Doorways began to feel like a home away from home.
“You can finally rest,” they shared. “It felt safe here.”
Through transplant support groups, shared meals, and everyday conversations with fellow guests, Jeff and Teresa formed friendships and connections that continued long after his stay. He spoke about the understanding that naturally develops between guests facing similar circumstances, even if their journeys look different.
“You realize you’re not alone here,” Jeff said.
As a pastor, Jeff soon found himself wanting to give back to the community that had supported him. During his stays at The Doorways, he began volunteering to lead Sunday morning services for fellow guests, creating space for encouragement, reflection, and connection during difficult seasons.
For Jeff, those gatherings became about more than faith alone. They were moments where guests could come together, talk openly, support one another, and find comfort in simply being understood.
Jeff and Teresa also reflected on the many small moments that stayed with them throughout their time at The Doorways: guests checking on one another, sharing meals, making plates for families returning late from the hospital, and offering encouragement without needing to be asked.
“That community feeling,” Teresa said, “you’re all in the same boat.”
Throughout their stay, Jeff and Teresa continued volunteering and supporting guests navigating their own medical journeys. Their story is a reminder that care often comes full circle and that even during life’s most difficult chapters, connection and compassion can leave a lasting impact.
