The Doorways receives $45,000 grant from Obici Healthcare Foundation to support the Patient and Family Access Program
The Doorways, a medical lodging facility providing a home away from home for patients and families who travel to Richmond for medical care, has been awarded a $45,000 grant from Obici Healthcare Foundation through its “Access to Care – Strengthening the Safety Net” initiative. The three-year grant supports the mental health components of The Doorways’ Patient and Family Access Program (PFAP) for residents of the Obici Foundation service area: Franklin, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Suffolk, Surry, Sussex and Gates County, North Carolina. Last year, The Doorways provided 2,358 nights of medical lodging for 242 residents from these communities.
The Patient and Family Access Program helps patients and their families access essential healthcare services by providing affordable lodging for those who must travel to Richmond to receive care. In addition to lodging, the program addresses the mental health and non-medical needs that can accompany a medical journey.
Through the Mental Health components of PFAP, licensed social workers provide Doorways guests with emotional support, individual counseling, support groups, and guidance in navigating the healthcare system. These services help patients and families manage the emotional, logistical, and practical challenges that often come with seeking medical care away from home.
“We are thrilled to expand our long-term partnership with Obici Healthcare Foundation and are grateful for its continued investment in the patients and families we serve,” said Sarah Melvin, Chief Philanthropy Officer. “This support allows The Doorways to address not only the healthcare access needs of our guests, but also the emotional and nonmedical challenges they face throughout their healthcare journey.”
Through a partnership with Obici Healthcare Foundation, The Doorways will help ensure that patients and families from the Foundation’s service area can access the care they need while receiving the support, connection, and comfort they deserve along the way.
